Leandro Erlich's giant balls roll through Buenos Aires for Youth Olympic Games

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

Argentine artist Leandro Erlich has created a massive interactive installation for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018. Five enormous balloons representing soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball, and golf will roll through the city to Parque Tres de Febrero on October 7. The participatory action blends performance and installation, inviting thousands to cooperate in moving the balls. Erlich described the project as a metaphor for unity and cooperation, stating that the ball is an object everyone can relate to and that has the power to unite people toward a common goal. The artist, born in 1973 in Buenos Aires, is known for manipulating perception of reality, notably with his 2013 work "Dalston House" for the London Festival of Architecture, a Victorian-style facade placed on the ground with a 45-degree mirror creating an optical illusion. Erlich represented Argentina at the 2001 Venice Biennale and participated in the Central Pavilion in 2005. He was also featured in the 2017 group show "ENJOY. L'arte incontra il divertimento" curated by Danilo Eccher, with a large mirror maze.
