Le regard de l'autre: Classic and Contemporary Art Dialogue in Rouen

The Musée des beaux-arts de Rouen and the Frac Haute-Normandie jointly presented 'Le regard de l'autre' from April 27 to September 2, 2002, celebrating the museum's bicentenary and the Frac's 20th anniversary. Curated by Laurent Salomé and Marc Donnadieu, the exhibition juxtaposed historical masterpieces—including works by Gérard David, Caravaggio, Poussin, and Delacroix—with contemporary pieces from the Frac collection by artists such as Valérie Jouve, John Murphy, Nils Udo, James Lee Byars, Zoe Leonard, Jack Pierson, Victor Burgin, and Fabrice Hybert. The show unfolded in two parts: a dense temporary display exploring themes like portraiture, the body, spirituality, and landscape, and interventions within the permanent galleries. The curators created dialogues across centuries, revealing unexpected resonances and questioning the boundaries between classical and contemporary art. A parallel exhibition at the Frac focused on the body, matter, and space.
