Le Noir est une Couleur: Homage to Aimé Maeght at Fondation Maeght
The Fondation Marguerite et Aimé Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence, France, presented the exhibition "Le noir est un couleur, Hommage vivant à Aimé Maeght" from June 30 to November 5, 2006, celebrating the centenary of Aimé Maeght's birth and the 60th anniversary of his gallery's inaugural exhibition of the same title. Curated by Dominique Païni, the show explored the expanded role of black in contemporary art, moving beyond painting to include material, ideological, color, op, and minimalist dimensions. Works ranged from material blacks by Shiraga and Serra to ideological blacks by Art & Language and General Idea, and color blacks by Newman, Miró, Soulages, Kline, and Malaval, as well as op/minimalist blacks by Calder, Soto, and Kelly. Ad Reinhardt's Abstract Painting was placed axially, accompanied by Vik Muniz's reproduction of three Reinhardt works made from dust collected at their previous exhibition site. The exhibition featured two exceptional Léger paintings, a work by Kimber Smith, and a futuristic installation by the Poiriers. Notable juxtapositions included Reinhardt's square, Tony Smith's parallelepiped, Rouan's door, and Parmiggiani's veiled canvases, as well as Marcel Mariën's hand sculpture, a neon by Morellet, and Hantaï's Tabula. Catherine Millet reviewed the exhibition for artpress, noting its critical and intelligent approach despite the absence of a Stella and a Rondepierre.
