Le Mouvement des Images: Cinema's Influence on Art at Centre Pompidou

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From April 5, 2006, to January 27, 2007, the Centre Pompidou in Paris showcased 'Le Mouvement des Images', curated by Philippe-Alain Michaud. This exhibition, a follow-up to 'Big Bang', explored the interplay between art and cinema through four distinct sections: 'Défilement', 'Projection', 'Récit', and 'Montage'. Notable pieces included Fernand Léger's 'Ballet mécanique', Marcel Duchamp's 'Anémic Cinéma', and Bruce Nauman's 'Mapping the Studio II'. Additional galleries displayed works by Constantin Brancusi, Andy Warhol, and Olafur Eliasson. While the exhibition suggested that cinema reshaped the perception of images, critic Paul Ardenne pointed out that some connections appeared contrived, cautioning against excessive attribution of cinematic influence to artists like Yves Klein and Anselm Kiefer, as well as Monet, Picasso, and Matisse.
