“Le Manuel de la jeune Mariée” at Théâtre La Bruyère: A Musical Comedy on Women’s Past

Set in 1957, the play “Le Manuel de la jeune Mariée” follows five brides-to-be studying a manual of etiquette that advises them to avoid political opinions, devote themselves tirelessly to their husbands, aim to have a dozen children, and disinfect their homes with clear water and formaldehyde. The comedy highlights the absurdity of these outdated guidelines and contrasts the condition of women then and now. Featuring music and songs, the production celebrates the progress women have made. Directed by Virginie Lemoine, the play has received praise from critics: TATOUVU calls it a hilarious homage to women’s struggles, LA PROVENCE describes it as a powerful tribute to half of humanity, L’AFFICHE lauds Lemoine’s staging as fresh, rigorous, and rich, and LE PARISIEN notes the joyful, colorful direction and the five actresses’ performances.
