Le Havre: A French City Reborn Through Concrete

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Le Havre, a French port city destroyed by Allied bombing on September 5-6, 1944, was rebuilt using reinforced concrete under the direction of Auguste Perret. The reconstruction, coordinated by the Atelier Perret with about 100 architects from 1945 to 1964, covered 150 hectares and took roughly 20 years. The city's UNESCO-listed urban plan includes the Quartier Perret, Front de Mer, and Place de l'Hôtel de Ville. Key landmarks include the Église Saint-Joseph with its 107-meter tower and 12,768 colored glass windows by Marguerite Huré, and the Maison du Patrimoine showcasing a model apartment with furniture by René Gabriel, André Beaudoin, and Marcel Gascoin. Later additions include the MuMa (Musée d'art moderne) by Guy Lagneau, Raymond Audugier, Michel Weill, and Jean Dimitrijevic (1961), Le Volcan cultural center by Oscar Niemeyer (1978-1982), and Bains des Docks by Jean Nouvel (2008). Since 2017, the city hosts Un Été au Havre, an annual contemporary art event featuring large-scale works. The 2023 edition, curated by Gaël Charbau, includes 17 installations such as Vincent Ganivet's container arch and Lang/Baumann's UP#3 sculpture.
