Le Bruit du temps Publishes D.H. Lawrence's Complete Short Stories and Essays
French publisher Le Bruit du temps has released two new volumes of D.H. Lawrence's works: 'Chère, ô chère Angleterre' (the third volume of his complete short stories) and 'Matins mexicains et autres essais' (a collection of essays). The editions are based on the authoritative Cambridge University Press editions, with new translations by Marc Amfreville (stories) and Jean-Baptiste de Seynes (essays). The translations correct previous bowdlerized or fragmentary versions, such as the earlier French translation of 'The Plumed Serpent' (2010, Éditions du Rocher). The short stories, written between 1913 and 1922, reflect Lawrence's trauma from World War I and his critique of industrialized Western civilization. Notable stories include 'Tickets, Please' and the title story 'England, My England.' The essays on Mexican mornings describe Indigenous dances and reveal Lawrence's theories on human sexuality and species memory. Catherine Millet's review in artpress praises the translations for their precision and vigor, noting that the new versions make the texts feel like entirely different works.
