Lawrence Weiner's aerial banner project over Rome's coast

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Lawrence Weiner's aerial banner project 'Tracce / Traces' will fly over Ladispoli and Anzio from August 16 to 25, 2020, as part of Macro Rome's outdoor program. Curated by new director Luca Lo Pinto, the project pays homage to Weiner's 1970 book produced for Sperone gallery, edited by Germano Celant. Weiner selected ten single-word past-participle verbs from the original fifty—including 'sbrecciato' (chipped), 'spaccato' (split), 'ostruito' (obstructed), 'affrontato' (faced), 'frantumato' (shattered), 'spruzzato' (sprayed), 'schiacciato' (crushed), 'lubrificato' (lubricated), 'deviato' (diverted), and 'infangato' (muddied)—to be towed by a banner plane each morning. The project explores the boundaries of the exhibition as a medium, aligning with Macro's upcoming reopening on July 17 with 'Museo per l'Immaginazione Preventiva – Editoriale.' Weiner, a key figure in conceptual art since the 1960s alongside Sol LeWitt, Douglas Huebler, and Joseph Kosuth, has consistently focused on public communication through urban interventions, books, and posters.
