cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The mayor of Yanbu, Ahmed Al Mahtout, has announced plans to restore the historic house where T.E. Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, lived in 1916. Located in the port city of Yanbu in west-central Saudi Arabia, the three-story building features carved wooden terraces in local style and had fallen into disrepair, with locals believing it haunted. The restoration aims to open a small museum by the end of the year. Lawrence, a British officer and secret agent, helped organize Arab forces against the Ottoman Empire during World War I, contributing to the capture of Aqaba and Damascus. He died in a motorcycle accident in 1935.
