Laurie Anderson's Memory Paintings at Made in Cloister, Naples

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Made in Cloister, a project launched in 2011 within Naples' former Lanificio Militare and including the 16th-century cloister of Santa Caterina a Formiello, presents Laurie Anderson's solo exhibition 'The Withness of the Body.' The American musician, performer, and writer (born Chicago, 1947) explores the dialectic between temporality and stream of consciousness. In the Renaissance cloister, she disperses recent memories—linked to the death of her beloved dog Lolabelle, also the subject of a film arriving in Italian cinemas in September—across some thirty large canvases, seeking to trace and capture recollection. Life and death, past and present, memory and oblivion: the expressionist strokes of oil paintings and charcoal drawings stage a visual narrative of past moments frozen in an eternal present. The exhibition runs until September 30, 2016 (closed in August).
