Laurence Louppe's Poetics of Contemporary Dance Revisited

Laurence Louppe's "Poétique de la danse contemporaine," published by Éditions Contredanse, continues her earlier work by documenting a renewal in choreographic approaches, particularly in France since the mid-1990s. The book highlights "libres-danseurs" whose radicality echoes historical avant-gardes. Louppe articulates the eclectic sources and influences of the body's "motor thought" with philosophical concepts and references to visual arts. This dance challenges the imaginary of the body and the stability of its representations, embracing casualness toward spectacular codes, virtuosity, and novelty. Characteristics include reductionism (sometimes to non-movement), gestural dissonances, intermittent body states, and fragmented space-time via video. The body is doubled, parceled, mapped, hybrid, formless, with insistent materiality and worked presence. Choreographers generate situations of de-production that expose the compositional process during performance, exploiting scores (recycling, rereadings), improvisation, discursive situations, and heterotopic spaces like gardens or bedrooms. They alter habitual empathy patterns through movement, questioning them both onstage and off. The spectator perceives both the event and the conditions of representation, sensing the invisible choreography of daily life, where a political refoundation of common codes occurs.
