Laura Wilson's 'Old Salt' Exhibition at The Collection Museum Explores Lincolnshire's Salt History Through Sound

The Collection Museum in Lincoln is showcasing Laura Wilson's exhibition 'Old Salt,' which features a sound installation. Concealed speakers within a stone wall emit voices discussing salt, including insights from archaeologist Tom Lane and six female volunteers: Ann, Cherry, Fiona, Jo, Kay, and Olivia, who share local, expert, and personal viewpoints. Wilson's creative process involved delving into The Collection's archive alongside archivists and artifacts, leading her to uncover ceramic 'briquetage' vessels historically used in Lincolnshire's Fenlands for salt production, now part of the exhibit. This soundscape transcends mere historical narration, encouraging reflections on future archaeology and everyday narratives. Inspired by volunteer Ann Stafford’s enthusiasm for the Magna Carta, Wilson incorporated volunteers into her project. The exhibition is open from 20 May to 23 August.
