Laura Poitras Wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival for Nan Goldin Documentary

The 79th Venice International Film Festival awarded the Golden Lion to Laura Poitras for her documentary 'All the Beauty and the Bloodshed,' centered on photographer and activist Nan Goldin. The jury, led by Julianne Moore, recognized the film's political urgency. Poitras described her work as following people fighting for justice, highlighting Goldin's crusade against the Sackler family's role in the opioid crisis. Goldin was absent due to preparing a retrospective. Luca Guadagnino won the Silver Lion for Best Director for 'Bones and All,' which also earned Taylor Russell the Marcello Mastroianni Award for emerging talent. Cate Blanchett and Colin Farrell won the Volpi Cups for Best Actress and Actor for 'Tár' and 'The Banshees of Inisherin,' respectively. Other winners included Alice Diop's 'Saint Omer' (Lion of the Future and Grand Jury Prize), Jafar Panahi's 'No Bear' (Special Jury Prize), and Martin McDonagh's screenplay for 'The Banshees of Inisherin.' The festival featured films exploring themes of transgender experience, imperfect families, motherhood, love, rebellion, and fear.
