Laura Pérez Vernetti's graphic novel on Vladimir Mayakovsky

publication · 2026-05-05

A new graphic novel by Spanish illustrator Laura Pérez Vernetti explores the life and work of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. The book, titled "Il caso Majakovskij," bridges Barcelona's modernist traditions with Moscow's Futurist and post-Futurist scenes. It opens with Mayakovsky's biography: son of a forest guard, largely self-taught, deeply influenced by Cervantes' Don Quixote. A revolutionary propagandist, he founded an advertising agency with Aleksandr Rodchenko in 1923, co-created the LEF magazine and artistic group, and worked across poetry, graphics, theater, and politics. He committed suicide in 1930 at age 37. Vernetti uses a stark palette of black, white, and red, adapting her style to each subject—here a sharp, nervous line echoing Mayakovsky's own aesthetic. The second part visualizes several of his poems. Published by Coconino Press-Fandango in 2016, the 56-page volume sells for €15.
