Laura Lima, Ana Linnemann, and Anna Maria Maiolino present site-specific interventions at Pivô in São Paulo

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From April 8 to June 2, 2018, Pivô in São Paulo hosted an exhibition featuring three artists who created site-specific works responding to the venue's unique architecture within the Oscar Niemeyer-designed Copan building. Laura Lima installed a minimalist ceiling intervention that alters spatial perception in the curvilinear space, while also constructing 'Incapacitated Room' (2018), an elevated office revealing gallery staff's feet through a horizontal gap. Ana Linnemann presented 'The invisibles (number 12)' (2017), where electric sockets rotate 360 degrees at regular intervals, and 'The studio's table' (2018), a plywood installation with mechanized elements referencing artmaking processes. Anna Maria Maiolino showed videos with DIY aesthetics addressing daily life and political commentary, including 'In-Out (Anthropophagy)' (1973–74) depicting mouths covered with tape as a statement on censorship during Brazil's military dictatorship (1964–85), and 'A Day' (1976–2016) featuring satirical juxtapositions of monkeys and soldiers in Rio de Janeiro. Maiolino also incorporated a Portuguese translation of T.S. Eliot's 1925 poem 'The Hollow Men' printed on vinyl and stretched across a tilting wall, using the century-old text to evoke contemporary feelings of powerlessness. The exhibition, reviewed in ArtReview's Summer 2018 issue, demonstrated how artists intelligently engaged with Pivô's challenging spatial and conceptual environment.
