Lars Von Trier's 'The House That Jack Built' Hits Italian Theaters Amid Censorship Controversy

other · 2026-05-04

Lars Von Trier's controversial film 'The House That Jack Built' finally arrives in Italian cinemas distributed by Videa, with both an uncut and a reduced version, both rated for adults only. The film, which scandalized audiences at the Cannes Film Festival, follows serial killer Jack through five murders he considers works of art. Matt Dillon presented the film in Rome, noting that in the US the uncut version was quickly replaced with a censored copy. Videa president Sandro Parenzo, who distributed Von Trier's first film 'Element of Crime' in the 1980s, released a statement expressing personal disdain for Von Trier's antisemitic remarks but defending the film's artistic merit. Also opening this week: 'Domani è un altro giorno' (Tomorrow Is Another Day), a remake of a 2015 Spanish film directed by Simone Spada and starring Valerio Mastandrea and Marco Giallini, about two friends facing a terminal diagnosis; and 'Dragon Ball Super: Broly', distributed by Koch Media, which explores the origin of the Saiyan warrior Broly and is expected to be the weekend's top earner.
