Larry’s List Private Art Museum Report 2023 Reveals 446 Private Museums Worldwide
The second report on private art museums by Larry’s List has been published, focusing on contemporary art institutions established by private collectors. It can be downloaded for free until June 30 and is based on data from Larry’s List and the Sociology Department at the University of Amsterdam, under the direction of Olav Velthuis. Noteworthy insights include the existence of 446 private contemporary art museums worldwide, with Germany having the highest number at 60, followed by the U.S. with 59, South Korea with 50, and both China and Italy with 30 each. Seoul leads with 17 museums. Since 2000, 82% have been established, and 152 opened between 2013 and 2023. Additionally, 50% are foundations, 82% maintain regular hours, and 88% are active on Instagram, with Fondazione Prada ranking third globally in followers. Over 110 museums have launched since 2016, particularly in Asia, with Seoul as a key area of growth.
