Larry Bell's Perceptual Art at Carré d'Art Nîmes
Larry Bell, born in 1939 in Chicago, is a key figure in American minimalism known for his glass cubes and perceptual art. His exhibition at Carré d'Art de Nîmes (February 25 – May 22, 2011), curated by Marie de Brugerolle, showcases his diverse production, including photography. Bell's work, often associated with the Finish Fetish movement, explores light, reflection, and transparency. He studied at Chouinard Art Institute under Robert Irwin and had his first solo show at Ferus Gallery in 1962, followed by exhibitions at Pace Gallery in 1965. Bell participated in 'The Responsive Eye' at MoMA (1965) and 'Primary Structures' at the Jewish Museum (1966). His glass cubes, placed on discontinuous pedestals, challenge minimalist orthodoxy. The exhibition also features his photographic works, revealing a concern with the transient presence of the figure. Bell's influence extends to Donald Judd and Dan Graham. The show includes works from his 'Fractions' series (1996-2000) and standing walls installations. Erik Verhagen, an art historian, contributes to the catalog.
