Larnaca Biennale Names Papaspyrou and Fournaris as 2027 Curators

festival-fair · 2026-05-19

The Larnaca Biennale has appointed Niki Papaspyrou and Marios Fournaris as curators for its fifth edition, scheduled for 13 October to 26 November 2027. This marks the first time the biennale will be led by a curatorial duo. The pair will develop an international, multidisciplinary programme featuring a main exhibition, performances, public actions, lectures, and workshops. Artistic Director Vassilis Vassiliades noted that both curators have connections to Cyprus: Papaspyrou has researched and curated Cypriot artists locally and abroad, and served on the jury for the 2023 edition; Fournaris returns to his place of origin, bridging experience in Greece and abroad with his Cypriot identity. The theme, inspired by the roots of the humanities and their dialogue with the present, will be announced in late May 2026, along with an open call. Papaspyrou is an art historian and curator with a background at the Byzantine and Christian Museum and a PhD candidate at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Fournaris is a visual artist, art historian, and curator with a PhD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, who has taught at UC Berkeley and the University of West Attica. Their curatorial interests include displacement, memory, habitation, belonging, and the anthropogenic climate crisis, as well as exploring how contemporary art maps relationships with place, history, and communities.
