Largo Argentina archaeological site reopens in Rome with new visitor path

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The Area Sacra di Largo Argentina in Rome has reopened to the public with a new walkway that allows visitors to access the site for the first time, spanning phases from the Republican era through Imperial and medieval periods. The project was funded by Bulgari Group as an act of patronage. Miguel Gotor, Rome's culture councillor, praised the intervention for making the site fully accessible to citizens and tourists. The visitor path from Via di San Nicola de' Cesarini is barrier-free. Two exhibition areas in the medieval Torre del Papito portico and rooms below street level display artifacts from 1920s excavations, including epigraph fragments, sarcophagi, architectural decorations, and two colossal statue heads of deities. The route includes illustrated panels in Italian and English, plus two large bilingual tactile panels in Braille for the visually impaired, featuring 3D scans of a slab fragment with a bird pecking fruit and a colossal female cult statue head. Superintendent Claudio Parisi Presicce noted the work of the Sovrintendenza technicians has restored a vital area showcasing over two millennia of history, from Republican Rome to imperial times, reuse as aristocratic residences, churches, and monasteries, to 1920s demolitions.
