Largest Martin Margiela auction ever to take place in Paris during Haute Couture Week
On January 27, 2025, during Haute Couture Week, Paris will host the largest auction ever dedicated to the early collections of designer Martin Margiela. Organized by Kerry Taylor Auctions in collaboration with Maurice Auction, the event will be held in a disused industrial building on Boulevard Voltaire in the 11th arrondissement, chosen to reflect Margiela's minimalist and anti-conformist aesthetic. The auction, titled "Martin Margiela: The Early Years, 1988-94," will feature 276 lots dating between 1988 and 1994, including garments, original patterns, and documents from a key period when Margiela redefined fashion design. Among the items are looks from the spring/summer 1990 collection, iconic pieces from autumn/winter 1991-92, oversized garments, gauze T-shirts, suits with removable sleeves, vinyl tops, priest dresses, tent skirts, and cabans from various seasons. Rare documents include original patterns for spring/summer 1989 jackets, photocopies of designs made as a consultant, and a collection of about 70 sketches. The lots belong to sisters Angela and Elena Picozzi, assembled over time on inspiration from their mother Graziella Picozzi, an Italian entrepreneur and founder of the Deni Cler brand, who recognized Margiela's talent early and collaborated with him on the 1988-89 project titled "!".
