Largest Basquiat exhibition in Latin America tours Brazil

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The largest exhibition of Jean-Michel Basquiat ever presented in Latin America toured three Brazilian cities: São Paulo, Brasília, and Belo Horizonte, hosted by the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil. Curated by Pieter Tjabes, the show featured 80 works from the private collection of Jose Mugrabi, the world's foremost Basquiat collector. The selection included paintings, collages, sketches, and ceramic plates, spanning the artist's brief but prolific career. Basquiat (1960–1988) was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and his work is deeply influenced by the city's 1970s and 1980s graffiti scene. As one of the few African American artists in a predominantly white art world, he subverted conventions by blending pop and high culture. The exhibition offered a comprehensive overview of his practice, from early street art to later studio works.
