Larbi Cherkaoui's Letter as Limit-Experience at L'Atelier 21

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Larbi Cherkaoui is gearing up to launch his second solo show at L'Atelier 21 in Casablanca, which will run from April 21 to May 23, 2026. The exhibition, named 'Une expérience-limite de la lettre', explores the multifaceted nature of the Arabic letter as both a physical form and an action. For the last thirty years, Cherkaoui has been immersed in Arabic calligraphy, drawing inspiration from Sufi philosophy, where the journey is more significant than the end result. He creates dynamic clusters of letters, ranging from large to tiny, that pulse with rhythm. Art critic Abderrahman Benhamza describes his focused letters as 'performed' artifacts, using a striking red and black palette, with hints of saffron. Cherkaoui's innovative approach introduces a visual blur that invites viewers to appreciate 'the invisible,' as noted by Abdelkébir Khatibi. Born in 1972 in Marrakech and holding a degree in applied arts, Cherkaoui sees art as a form of prayer. His works are featured in several prestigious collections, including the Dalloul Art Foundation in Beirut and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tunis. He currently lives and works in Marrakech.
