award · 2026-04-20

Lap-See Lam, a Swedish artist, has been honored with the Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award for 2025, which includes a $100,000 prize. Her multimedia work delves into the aesthetics of the Cantonese diaspora, utilizing shadow play and opera to examine the nuances of cultural heritage. In June 2026, Lam will hold a solo exhibition at Norway's Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, which will also feature an acquisition budget for the museum's permanent collection. The artist, who completed her MFA at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 2020, was chosen by an international jury that commended her ability to connect personal family history with themes of identity and migration. Additionally, her work will be showcased at Montreal's PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art from April 25 to September 14, and at Stockholm's Moderna Museet from May 10 to August 24. Jury member Paulina Rider Wilhelmsen remarked on the 'magic' present in Lam's exploration of memory and familial stories. Established in 2019, this biennial award recognizes contemporary artists who make impactful contributions to their discipline.
