Lanfranco Aceti's Political Installation in Thessaloniki

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Lanfranco Aceti's site-specific installation 'Knock, Knock, Knocking' at the Mediterranean Garden Pavilion in Thessaloniki runs until November 15, curated by Camilla Boemio and promoted by the Museum of Contemporary Cuts. The work explores the loss of relationship with the nation-state, using the metaphor of a failed romantic partnership with a selfish partner. Domestic and intimate objects, such as used bedsheets, symbolize the end of a relationship and the negation of the social contract transposed into the private sphere. Aceti is internationally known for his socio-political stances and performances. The metaphorical and physical use of dirty laundry was suggested by the Thessaloniki Biennale theme 'Imagined Homes'. The works address conflicts and individual freedoms, dismantled and betrayed. The architecture and location of the Mediterranean Garden Pavilion act as a decoder of curiosity in a fluctuating reflection between interior and exterior, intimate and public space. Domestic spaces are destabilizing and destructive mirrors of his research. Women remain solitary at the center of this crisis provoked by patriarchal and phallic values. The response is an invitation to action and to exploit the multiple possibilities offered by the now disconnected responsibilities of a destroyed home.
