Landworks Sardinia: Annacaterina Piras on the Challenges and Potential of Landscape Workshops
Since 2011, Annacaterina Piras, the scientific coordinator for Landworks Sardinia, has highlighted the initiative's growth, which began with a non-operational workshop in the Ingurtosu and Montevecchio mining park. The project, rooted in the University of Sassari's Department of Architecture and Planning, introduced a master's program in Mediterranean Landscape Urbanism in 2009. Sardinia is characterized as "an enormous playground" and "all a museum" for design. The Sulcis-Iglesiente area, one of Italy's most impoverished regions, hosts ten-day workshops focused on efficiency, with participants chosen from portfolios submitted by universities worldwide. In 2015, eight refugees participated. Leaders of the team include Henri Bava and Simon Bussiere, with plans to increase workshops to bimonthly in Sardinia and extend to Florence, Beirut, and Australia.
