Landmark Exhibition on Taiwanese Women Calligraphers Opens at Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center
A major exhibition exploring a century of Taiwanese women's calligraphy opened at the Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center on September 5, 2025. Curated by Professor Hui-wen Lu of National Taiwan University, 'Walking Their Own Paths: Women Calligraphers in Contemporary Taiwan' presents over 60 works by more than 50 artists. Organized by the Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts, the show runs until December 1, 2025. The exhibition addresses a historical gap by highlighting contributions from women often overlooked in East Asian calligraphic traditions. It spans from the Japanese colonial era to contemporary practitioners, featuring artists like Cai Bi-Yin, Chang Mo-Chun, and Yuan Jai. Four thematic sections structure the presentation: 'Networks and Lineages' examines artistic genealogies; 'Her Body' focuses on corporeal dimensions of writing; 'Crossing Boundaries' explores cross-media dialogues; and 'Writing Here and Now' considers contemporary responses to social issues. International perspectives are included through works by artists like Shirin Neshat, Fabienne Verdier, and Kawao Tomoko, whose HITOMOJI PROJECT—Women series is featured. The exhibition builds on research initiated during the 2020 'Unfamiliar Voices: Women Calligraphy Art Forum'. Admission is NTD 100, with discounts for Taoyuan residents and students. Special events like 'Women’s Night' will be held during the run. The venue is located at No. 100, Daren Road, Dayuan District, Taoyuan City.
