Lala Rukh's First Major International Survey Opens at Sharjah Art Foundation
Lala Rukh: In the Round is the first major international retrospective dedicated to the influential Pakistani artist and activist Lala Rukh, who lived from 1948 to 2017. This exhibition highlights her artistic evolution over thirty years across drawing, printmaking, and video, all set against the backdrop of Pakistan's political turmoil and feminist movements. Her work features striking imagery of landscapes, lunar cycles, and historical sites, utilizing a minimalist approach with lines and symbols. The show includes rare early works, original posters, and interviews with advocates for gender and civic rights. It also displays pieces from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection and lesser-known series from Sri Lanka and Gadani, with her final artwork, Rupak (2016), being showcased here for the first time. The exhibition is curated by Hoor Al Qasimi and Natasha Ginwala.
