Laila Gohar and Arket Transform 18th-Century Carousel with Fruit Seats

architecture-design · 2026-04-19

During Milan Design Week 2026, artist Laila Gohar and Nordic brand Arket unveiled a repurposed 18th-century carousel at Giardino delle Arti. The carousel, originating from Wiesbaden, Germany, dates to the late 1700s and features intricate painted scenes and floral illustrations. Gohar left the antique details untouched but replaced the seating with oversized fruit and vegetable shapes—eggplants, pears, radishes, and onions—reflecting her specialization in food art. The installation emphasizes interactivity and participation, rejecting a static model of art. Gohar described it as "something open and inclusive" that invites people in. The carousel is part of a larger collaboration that also includes Gohar's ready-to-wear debut on April 21, a 27-piece collection ranging from a smock blouse to a modular dress. Gohar, dubbed the "Björk of food" by the New Yorker in 2022, has previously created edible sculptures like a chair-shaped cake for Sotheby's and a bed made of bread.
