Lai Lon Hin's 'Gritty Eye' Exhibition at Blindspot Gallery Explores Uncanny Hong Kong Moments

Lai Lon Hin's second solo exhibition at Blindspot Gallery in Hong Kong presents 36 photographic works that capture unguarded moments in public spaces. Titled 'Gritty Eye,' which translates to 'sty' in Cantonese, the show marks a departure from his 2010 debut that featured colorful architectural images shot with an SLR camera. Instead, Hin used inconspicuous cameraphones like iPhones and older LG models to photograph subjects unaware, employing minimal post-production. The exhibition is organized into miniseries, such as 'Fingers Grazing' (2017) paired with 'Preparations Before Travel' (2018), which together explore artificial constructions revealing alternative realities. Works like 'Mr Chan' (2018) feature a lifesize cardboard cutout from a Hong Kong government anti-smoking campaign, creating authoritative yet uncanny portraits. Many pieces exhibit doubling effects: 'Airy Bangs' (2018) shows two women with half-closed eyes, 'Backed by Brilliance' (2018) presents a portrait on a lightbox displayed as an image on another lightbox, and a curtain printed with nearly clasped hands divides the gallery space. 'Linda' (2018) appears as a discomfiting screensaver program showing a symmetrical face from a Guangzhou passport-photo booth bouncing across the screen. Hin's focus lies not in voyeurism but in capturing people and objects off-guard within today's constant image-production environment, questioning how truth emerges from momentary conditions rather than contextual abundance.
