LACMA's oceanic curatorial framework reimagines collection display in David Geffen Galleries
Under the leadership of director Michael Govan, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has implemented a fresh curatorial approach in the David Geffen Galleries. This new strategy involves 45 curators who have merged traditional classifications, using bodies of water as a framework for organization. This method emphasizes the significance of water in the exchange of objects and ideas, fostering connections throughout the collection. Notable pieces featured include Todd Gray's 'Octavia's Gaze' (2025), a 19th-century Kashmir Map Shawl, Ruth Asawa's wire sculpture from 1954, El Anatsui's 'Fading Scroll' (2007), Diego Rivera's 'Flower Day' (1925), a marble 'Hope Athena' from the 2nd century AD, and Clara Peeters's still life from 1625. The architecture of the building further supports this fluid display, promoting a contemplative viewing experience.
