LACMA Construction Progress and Art Installations at Geffen Galleries

institutional · 2026-03-21

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has provided an update on construction activities for its new building. Major structural work on the museum facility has concluded, with ongoing commissioning of building systems. Interior work continues on ground levels at the east side north of Wilshire Boulevard and at the Spaulding Lot south of Wilshire. Outdoor space development including grading, concrete paving, and landscaping is progressing throughout the site. Two significant art installations are underway: Jeff Koons's 2000 sculpture 'Split-Rocker' is being planted with over 45,000 plants to create a living monumental work for the Geffen Galleries' public spaces, and Todd Gray's commissioned piece 'Octavia's Gaze' is being installed after LACMA commissioned the artist last year. Several temporary closures affect public access: sidewalk sections along Wilshire Boulevard between Spaulding and South Stanley Avenues and along Spaulding Avenue between Wilshire and 8th Street are closed through February 2026 for sidewalk and tree installation, with pedestrian detours in place. A northbound lane on Spaulding Avenue between 8th Street and Wilshire is also closed through February 2026. Additionally, Metro construction along Wilshire Boulevard's south curbside between Spaulding and San Diego Way creates a work zone with intermittent lane reductions. Construction operates Monday-Friday 7am-7pm and Saturday 8am-6pm. Clark Construction, the general contractor, implements health and safety measures including OSHA compliance, protective equipment provision, hand washing stations, and quarantine protocols for symptomatic workers.
