La Samaritaine Reopens in Paris After SANAA-Led Renovation

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

After a closure lasting 16 years, the Samaritaine department store in Paris reopened on June 23, 2021, following renovations by the Japanese architectural firm SANAA. Initially launched in 1870 by Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jaÿ, the store underwent expansions featuring Art Nouveau and Art Déco styles. LVMH acquired the property after its closure in 2005, but the reopening was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now known as Samaritaine Paris Pont-Neuf, the 70,000-square-meter site includes 20,000 square meters of retail space operated by DFS. The restoration preserved the original glass roof and the 1907 Peacock Fresco. The complex offers 600 brands, 12 restaurants, a spa, a nursery, and 96 public housing units. Cheval Blanc Paris, LVMH's inaugural urban 5-star hotel, is set to open in September 2021.
