Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land won 7 Golden Globes out of 7 nominations, the most in the awards' history, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor and Actress for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for "City of Stars." The film had previously won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and opened the Venice Film Festival, where Emma Stone won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress.
