La finestra sul cortile: Private Collections at GAM Milan

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) in Milan presents 'La finestra sul cortile. Scorci di collezioni private' (Rear Window. Glimpses of Private Collections), curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, running until February 26, 2017. The exhibition integrates over ninety masterpieces from GAM's own collection with works from two prestigious Italian private collections: Collezione Panza and Collezione Berlingieri. A central feature is a site-specific light projection by Arthur Duff, titled 'Adaptation', inspired by Hitchcock's film 'Rear Window', which illuminates the villa's courtyard and facade until spring 2017. The show also marks the start of UBS's participation in the conservation restoration of about seventy works from GAM's artistic heritage, with extraordinary public access to the underground storage rooms. Barbero structured the exhibition as a cinematic journey across three floors: the ground floor invites travel, the first floor offers surprise and disorientation, and the second floor pays homage to donors Grassi and Vismara. Highlights include juxtapositions such as Manet's 'Il signor Arnaud a cavallo' (1875) with Rudolf Stingel's 'Black Damask' (2007), and Carl Andre's 'Milky Way' (1985) with Giovanni Boldini's 'Americana' (1903). The exhibition aims to reveal lesser-known collections through new perspectives, treating the museum as a narrative space.
