La Crescentina: Country House Art Space in Monferrato Opens Maïmouna Guerresi Show

La Crescentina – Laboratorio per l'Arte, a cultural center in a restored farmhouse in Fubine, Monferrato, will reopen on September 15 with a solo exhibition by Italian-Senegalese photographer and sculptor Maïmouna Guerresi (born 1951 in Pove del Grappa). The exhibition, titled "Noyyi, Wéyal Noyyi / Breath, Keep Breathing," features a new installation centered on a Minbar—the pulpit used for sermons in mosques, traditionally reserved for male imams and forbidden to women. Guerresi replaces the human figure with a fan that moves strips cut from a thermal rescue blanket, symbolizing an unheard divine breath. The project addresses the struggle of women to make their voices heard in contexts of discomfort, suffering, and humiliation across Indian, Asian, African, and Western societies. La Crescentina was founded in 2021 by architect Alessandro Monteforte and Fiorella Miraglio, with art historian Marzia Capannolo as curator. The space had been a private home and gathering place for artists like Urano Palma, Aldo Mondino, and Maïmouna Guerresi since the late 1980s, before being transformed into an association promoting visual arts, literature, and music. Guerresi is represented internationally by Mariane Ibrahim Gallery in Chicago.
