L’Été photographique de Lectoure explores history through Walter Benjamin’s lens

festival-fair · 2026-04-24

The 2015 edition of L’Été photographique de Lectoure, curated by Catsou Roberts, takes Walter Benjamin’s theses on history as its guiding thread. The festival presents works by fifteen artists that engage with historiography of the oppressed, aiming to illuminate the present and arm for the future. Exhibiting across multiple picturesque venues in Lectoure, the show avoids the overcrowding typical of biennials, offering a coherent and carefully paced experience. Artists include Larry Achiampong, David Birkin, Mounir Fatmi, Marco Poloni, Uriel Orlow, Joachim Koester, Matthew Buckingham, Sarah Dobai, Melik Ohanian, Eric Baudelaire, Lina Selander, Rä di Martino, and Bertille Bak. Bak’s installation on mass tourism cruise ship workers is singled out for its humor and empathy. The festival runs through the summer of 2015.
