L'endroit du regard at Crac Sète: Perception and Vision
The exhibition 'L'endroit du regard' at the Centre régional d'art contemporain (Crac) in Sète, France, from December 12, 2003, to February 29, 2004, explores modes of perception and the act of looking. Curated by Noëlle Tissier, the show features works by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot, Jean-Daniel Berclaz, Marcel Dinahet, Maciek Stepinski, Gaël Peltier, Elie Cristiani, and Filip Francis. Boursier-Mougenot's installation invites visitors to lie on a couch and feel music through their bodies, while Berclaz presents a bed of snow for contemplating viewpoints. Dinahet's video incorporates the sound of footsteps on algae and sand. Stepinski's N-113 (2001-2003) shows photographs and videos of a road and its surroundings, with high horizons evoking classical landscape painting but focusing on the 'perimeter of surroundings'—a protected zone around historic monuments. Peltier's videos Anté (2003) and Pré (2002) use horizontal framing reminiscent of a car windshield, referencing 1970s film noir. Cristiani's drawing table, installed vertically, uses infrared to detect visitors and traces a line at the Earth's rotation speed, simultaneously erased. Francis's 'memory' paintings alter retinal persistence. The exhibition emphasizes sound as an opening of vision to all senses, with Boursier-Mougenot creating sound environments for Berclaz and Stepinski designing his own sonic space. Marie de Brugerolle wrote the review.
