L'Autre Visage: Portrait and Photographic Experimentation at Centre photographique de Rouen

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Until October 1, 2016, the Centre photographique de Rouen is hosting 'L'Autre Visage', an exhibition that fuses portraiture with photographic experimentation. This showcase questions conventional ideas of likeness by deconstructing and modifying facial features. The artistic director, Raphaëlle Stopin, seeks to create an 'archetype of the ordinary.' The display draws inspiration from the 'gueules cassées' of World War I and Dada collages, featuring materials related to Anna Coleman Ladd, who crafted facial prostheses in 1917. It also includes Erwin Blumenfeld's fashion photography from the 1940s and Alphonse Bertillon's anthropometric methods. Artists like Nathalie Boutté and John Stezaker focus on facial intricacies, while Julie Cockburn and Birthe Piontek bring new life to anonymous images. Amie Dicke's 'One Image One Cartridge' (2016) addresses the saturation of digital imagery.
