KYOTOGRAPHIE 2026 Explores the Edge as a Site of Tension and Possibility

festival-fair · 2026-05-10

KYOTOGRAPHIE 2026, Kyoto's international photography festival, opens under the theme "Uncertainty & Possibility," examining the concept of the edge as a location of tension and potential. Co-founders Lucille Reyboz and Yusuke Nakanishi describe the edge as a place where certainty falters and something new emerges. The main programme features over 13 international artists, including Daido Moriyama, whose black-and-white street photography captures post-WWII Japanese urban transformation; Linder Sterling, who challenges identity and representation; Anton Corbijn, exploring celebrity and perception; Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre, documenting decay and abandonment; and Juliette Agnel, whose nocturnal observations of minerals and plants engage with invisible forces connecting humanity and nature. The festival also highlights the changemaking potential of images with a tribute to late Palestinian photographer Fatima Hammouna, alongside works by Federico Estol, Lebohang Kganye, Pieter Hugo, and Ernest Cole addressing identity, memory, migration, and systemic inequalities. The 2026 edition runs at various locations across Kyoto until 17 May.
