Kyotographie 2025: Photography on the Edge in Kyoto
The 13th edition of Kyotographie, Japan's foremost international photography festival, runs until May 17 under the theme 'Edge'. The main program features 14 exhibitions, including a major retrospective of Daido Moriyama at the Kyocera Museum of Art, showcasing over 200 images, 400 magazines, and 100 books. Moriyama, born in 1938, pioneered the are-bure-boke aesthetic and continues to photograph daily. Linder Sterling's 'Goddess of the Mind' at the Museum of Kyoto Annex presents her feminist photomontages and album art for Buzzcocks. Kenyan artist Thandiwe Muriu, this year's African resident, exhibits 'Camo' in a historic kimono workshop, using kitenge fabric to explore identity. A poignant exhibition, 'The Eye of Gaza', features the work of Fatma Hassona, a Palestinian photographer killed in an airstrike on April 16, 2025, alongside a documentary by Sepideh Farsi. Ernest Cole's 'House of Bondage' is presented with rare footage, documenting apartheid South Africa. The satellite KG+ festival includes 164 exhibitions, talks, workshops, a book fair, and the experimental music festival Kyotophonie.
