Kyiv Biennial 2023 Goes European with Five Cities

The fifth edition of the Kyiv Biennial will take place starting October 2023 under the title 'Against the Logic of War', signaling resistance. Despite ongoing attacks, Kyiv remains a host city, but the biennial expands to Ivano-Frankivsk, Uzhhorod, Vienna, Warsaw, and Berlin, positioning itself as a European event. Organized by the Kyiv Visual Culture Research Center, curators Serge Klymko, Hedwig Saxenhuber, and Georg Schöllhammer conceived the project on short notice. The biennial aims to support the Ukrainian artist diaspora and foster dialogue with European colleagues. Events in Ukrainian cities will occur in still-operational museums and structures, some damaged by conflict. Participating organizations include the Tranzit network, Other Edges project, Museum of Modern Art Warsaw, Museum Crisis Center Lviv, Dovzhenko Centre Kyiv, Asortymentna Kimnata Ivano-Frankivsk, and Sorry, No Rooms Available Uzhhorod. The biennial opens October 5 at Dovzhenko Centre in Kyiv and October 17 in Vienna, with Warsaw on October 23, and closes in Berlin in 2024.
