KWK Promes embeds Yaw House into Poland's Beskid Mountains
In Poland's Beskid Mountains, KWK Promes has completed Yaw House, a grass-roofed residence shaped by the incline of its site. The architects embedded the building into the land rather than leveling the terrain. Named after the aviation term 'yaw,' the house rotates around a vertical axis, starting with a gabled silhouette parallel to neighboring structures before turning toward southern light and valley views. The entrance and service spaces, including areas for off-road vehicles, sit at the front, while the ground floor opens into a glazed living area facing greenery. Bedrooms occupy the upper level. The rotation creates a natural separation between public and private zones. During construction, one resident required intensive rehabilitation, prompting the clients to add a swimming pool. KWK Promes integrated the circular pool centrally, making it the spatial and emotional heart of the home. Landscaping was adapted to local snakes, with shorter greenery for safety. Completed in 2025, the house avoids a singular visual statement, responding instead to slope, sunlight, movement, rehabilitation, and ecology. Photography is by Jakub Certowicz.
