KUTT zine compiled into book reviving 2000s lesbian underground
KUTT, the short-lived sister zine to BUTT magazine, is being compiled into a new book titled 'KUTT FACSIMILE'. The zine ran for only three issues between 2002 and 2003, focusing on the dyke scene in Amsterdam and beyond. Former editor Jessica Gysel reflects on the project's origins, which began as a joke in a bar with the founders of BUTT. The first issue featured Chloë Sevigny on the cover, photographed by Martien Mulder, and included an interview conducted by Gysel in Paris. Inside pages featured contributions from Eileen Myles, Peaches, Collier Schorr, Ryan McGinley, and Viviane Sassen. McGinley's portraits of Lizzy McChesney (Lissy Trullie) jumping naked on a trampoline at NYC gay bar The Cock are among the best-known works. Gysel notes that many artists were at the beginning of their careers. The book responds to nostalgia for tactile media among millennials and Gen Z. Gysel hopes it will inspire a new cohort of queer editors and zine-makers. Published by IDEA, the book is out on 21 May 2026.
