Kurasu Pop-Up at Taikoo Li Sanlitun Blends Origami and Coffee Culture

architecture-design · 2026-05-09

Atelier L designed a pop-up for Kurasu at Taikoo Li Sanlitun in Beijing, occupying a compact 8m by 3.5m space with a maximum height of 3.5m. The design reinterprets Kurasu's signature dripper as two architectural volumes articulated with origami-like lightness. The larger volume, an inverted dripper shape, houses coffee preparation with a central linear bar separating service and customer areas, creating an intimate izakaya-like atmosphere. The smaller volume cantilevers outward as a street-facing showcase and meeting point, transforming the temporary space into an urban micro-gallery. A operable glass roof mitigates wind loads and adapts to seasonal changes, directing customers' gaze toward the sky and surrounding trees. Materials include brushed stainless steel, wood-grained aluminum, and beige textured finishes, evoking Kyoto's ritual sensibility. A steel base anchors the volumes, with slightly raised corners referencing origami. Dark gravel, natural stone slabs, and scattered rocks create a courtyard-like setting. The design prioritizes spatial efficiency and cultural narrative, rejecting uniform design in favor of intercultural dialogue. Atelier L explores how a slower pace of life can flourish in urban commercial environments, echoing Kurasu's brand meaning of 'living'.
