Kunstmuseum Bern to Host Major Solo Shows for Marisa Merz and Carol Rama in 2025

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Kunstmuseum Bern is dedicating two large monographic exhibitions to Italian artists Marisa Merz and Carol Rama throughout 2025. Both artists were born in Turin, died, and received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. Merz (1926–2019), the only woman among the Arte Povera protagonists, developed a practice focused on silence, poetry, and fragility. Her retrospective, curated by Livia Wermuth, runs until June 1 and features about 80 works, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations, as well as documentation of early actions. Rama (1918–2015), a self-taught artist associated with the Movimento Arte Concreta, explored sexuality, madness, illness, and death. Her exhibition, also curated by Wermuth, is open from March 7 to July 13, marking ten years since her death, and includes around 110 works spanning 70 years. A concurrent show is held at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt.
