Kumamoto Castle Damaged by 7.1 Earthquake, Restoration Delayed

cultural-heritage · 2026-07-31

On July 28, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit southern Kyushu, Japan, resulting in damage to Kumamoto Castle, which was in the process of restoration following the 2016 earthquakes. As of July 31, the disaster had claimed 35 lives and prompted the evacuation of thousands amid sweltering temperatures. The castle experienced collapsed stone walls and some structural damage, remaining closed for safety evaluations. Rintaro Mitsuyasu indicated that restoration efforts could be postponed until fiscal 2052. Additionally, the quake affected cultural landmarks, such as Yatsushiro Shrine, and caused the temporary closure of at least 16 museums and galleries. The Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto reported no significant damage and intends to reopen its public areas next week.
