institutional · 2026-04-26

On October 21, 2024, the Kultur Ensemble Palermo inaugurated its new home at Bottega 1 within the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in Palermo. This is the first joint Franco-German cultural institute outpost, born from the collaboration between Institut français and Goethe-Institut under the 2019 Aachen Treaty. The space focuses on artist residencies, fostering exchange among Italian, French, German, and international artists. The opening featured installations, musical performances, and a fireworks display. Johanna Solal presented the installation 'Assaggiare il Mediterraneo'. Gianni Gebbia, Ruth Kemna, and Alfred Spirli performed as a trio. Lea Letzel, a 2023 resident, created a pyrotechnic performance with Alfredo Vaccalluzzo. Malo Patron, with translator Sven Keromnes, wrote the trilingual text 'Il Papireto' on interior walls. Alessandro Librio produced the sound installation 'I Sireni' about water. German Ambassador to Italy Hans-Dieter Lucas and French Ambassador Martin Briens spoke at the opening, emphasizing the space as a symbol of European unity. The Kultur Ensemble network has since expanded to Ramallah and Atlanta.
