Kubrick's Early Photography Reveals Cinematic Genius
A new book, 'Stanley Kubrick. Drame & Ombres, photographie 1945-1950', published by Editions Phaidon, compiles the director's early photographic work for Look magazine. Edited by Rainer Crone, the volume selects 1,200 negatives from 12,000 discovered at the Library of Congress and the Museum of the City of New York. The images, taken between 1945 and 1950, include boxing matches, celebrity portraits (Leonard Bernstein), and scenes of American life. Kubrick staged many shots, such as a news vendor posed with a headline announcing Franklin D. Roosevelt's death, a photo that helped him get hired at Look. His compositions show constructivist influences (Alexander Rodchenko) and prefigure his filmmaking style, with dramatic angles and narrative tension. The book highlights his ability to transform mundane subjects into personal, critical, and humorous works. A famous series on boxers Rocky Graziano and Walter Cartier at the Copacabana club (1947-1949) captures the anticipation before a fight, echoing Martin Scorsese's 'Raging Bull'. Kubrick's photography reveals a search for meaning beyond the frame, a quality that defined his later films like 'Eyes Wide Shut' and 'Dr. Strangelove'.
