Kriszta Székely's 'Uncle Vanya' at Teatro Stabile di Torino
Hungarian director Kriszta Székely, 38, from the Katona József Theatre in Budapest, is staging a fresh version of Chekhov's 'Uncle Vanya' at the Teatro Stabile di Torino. The set features a large greenhouse that serves as a transparent cage, complete with a metal staircase and neon lights, symbolizing a home that feels like a prison. Székely’s collaboration with Ármin Szabó shifts the focus from the usual sadness to a contemporary setting without major changes to the story. The plot unfolds at Professor Serebryakov's estate, where his young wife Elena’s arrival ignites jealousy among Vanya, Sonya, and Doctor Astrov. Vanya is portrayed by Paolo Pierobon, who delivers a powerful performance. The production runs January 29–30, 2020, at Katona József Színház after its Turin shows.
